Meaning and boundaries
Category 4 is deep but potentially assessable surface damage. It becomes Category 5 when a crack, inaccessible location, compromised construction, coating limitation, or other condition makes safe and effective in-place restoration impossible.
Why it matters in glass restoration
Chip flanks and flecking indicate a more severe morphology that may require substantial material removal and stricter controls for heat, distortion, remaining thickness, stress, and replacement comparison.
